Online Etymology Dictionary

[edit]

As is par for its course, the Online Etymology Dictionary entry here is off. Irving's correspondence shows he befriended Herman (whose name was spelled with an -a-) after the publication of his book. Instead, if it wasn't made whole cloth, it's more likely the lampoon was very loosely inspired by Herman's blowhard father before Irving met the family personally.

Their name has nothing to do with marbles. — LlywelynII 16:39, 9 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
