Etymology
[edit]I have often wondered about the origin of this word. I have noticed some suggestive sound-alike words in other languages; most noticeably:
- Arabic جَدّ (jadd, “fortune”)
- Georgian ჯადო (ǯado, “magic”)
- Hebrew ידיעה (yedi'a, “knowledge”)
- Korean 제도 (jedo, “system”)
- Persian جدا (jedā, “distinct”)
- Punjabi ਜਾਦੂ (jādū, “magic”)
- Swahili jitahidi (“effort”)
I am eager to know where Lucas got his ideas. I know that he studied anthropology, so he has plenty of exposure to different cultures, etc. Just curious.—Strabismus 22:50, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
Encylopedic much?
[edit]The etymology is WAY too detailed. Someone knowledgeable on this word should clean it up. Tooironic 05:06, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
