Clipped

[edit]

@Mar vin kaiser Is the clipped part really English only that got borrowed into Tagalog? Isn't it the other way around that it's a Tagalog clipping and English just borrowed it? 𝄽 ysrael214 (talk) 00:02, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Ysrael214: I didn't type in that part. But yeah what you said makes more sense. --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 09:39, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Mar vin kaiser Oh sorry I looked at the wrong person. Tagging @Mlgc1998 𝄽 ysrael214 (talk) 09:42, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Ysrael214 the way I've thought about the timeline of how this term came about is like this:
1. the group, Hukbalahap, was formed by Tagalog speakers from Tagalog hukbo +‎ -ng +‎ bayan +‎ laban +‎ sa +‎ Hapon through the initial syllables of the main words
2. news spread in ph that there's a new group calling themselves "Hukbalahap"
3. formal English media of ph spread the word "Hukbalahap" outside of ph, enough that Americans hear about it often enough they adapt the word for their use too
4. Americans think it's too long on the mouth for them, so they shorten it to just "Huk" cuz they don't know Tagalog and how it's a compound as mentioned no. 1
5. American media in US and those still in the philippines around those years it popped up keep using just "Huk"
6. people in ph who typically know both English and Tagalog hear and/or see Americans mention "Huk" instead and decide, we will adapt it too cuz the americans are already doing it
7. many years or decades later, voila! what we have today. Mlgc1998 (talk) 11:28, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Mlgc1998 Why can't Tagalogs shorten Hukbalahap independently? Does it need to go through English to be clipped? 𝄽 ysrael214 (talk) 11:41, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Ysrael214 wouldn't it be logically strange from Tagalog pov, like "Huk" would just be short for hukbo which could be any army, like in the future, someone might misconstrue if "Huk" was just short for say hukbong-katihan, or hukbong-dagat, or some other hukbo/army of the government or other places Mlgc1998 (talk) 14:29, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
