Hīerosolyma or Hierosolyma? (Is the macron correct?)
[edit]Is the macron above the i correct? Are there any sources for that? In my dictionary ("Der kleine Stowasser" Latin-German dictionary from 1971) and in the French Wiktionary there is no macron above the i. So, is the i long, short or are both possible variants? - Lewis and Short show no macron on the "i". SemperBlotto (talk) 15:40, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
- I'm pretty sure it was a simple matter of mistaking a breve for a macron. Etymologically, a macron would make no sense whatsoever: the fact that it's syllabic at all comes from the influence of Greek (deprecated template usage) ἱερός (hieros), and all the Latin words I know of that start with hier have no macron. I just changed it- I hope I didn't mess anything else in the process. Chuck Entz (talk) 16:48, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
