Luck is avery bad definition of heil. I'm proofreading a book on the evolution of the Monarchy for a professor, I am a Medievalist and archaeology intern. It's more like being blessed, which was my suggestion to the professor. There is no element of chance involved as is with the word luck.

It simply means "well-being, prosperity, a state where things are fine" (whether bodily or otherwise). This state will often be seen as a blessing, especially in the religious sense of "salvation", but neither "luck" nor "blessing" are accurate translations.
Probably "luck" was a mistranslation of German Glück, which also means "happiness".
