From Middle Low German?
[edit]@2.203.201.41 Where did you find Middle Low German Grö̂nlant (“Greenland”)? The only Grö̂nlant in {{R:gml:Kobler}}
means "meadowland" and it's not borrowed. —Caoimhin ceallach (talk) 16:33, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Caoimhin ceallach Greenland was discovered around the year 900, so it kinda goes without saying that the word existed in Middle Low German. MLG was basically the official written language of Scandinavia. In fact, Greenland (together with all of Scandinavia) was under the Archbishopric of Hamburg. But I did actually do a quick search before editing, just to make sure that the spelling "Gronlant", which I was using, was attested. So there's a source in Richard Hennig's Terrae incognitae, where "Gronlant" is mentioned several times, for example: Jtem Jrlant licht int Sudosten van Gronlant. Jtem Jszlant licht int Osten van Gronlant . ("Further, Ireland is to the southeast of Greenland. Further, Iceland is to the east of Greenland"). You'll find it on Google Books by looking for these words. It shouldn't be too difficult to find several more attestations, but I hope I don't have to. 2.203.201.41 02:53, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- PS: Pinging doesn't work with anons. I just came here by accident. If you need to contact me, you must write on my talk page. But I will check this page again in the coming days. 2.203.201.41 2.203.201.41 02:57, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. It's the attestation that counts. If it weren't attested but we assume it existed, we'd have to mark it with a star (*). Do you know Middle Low German? If so and you feel like it, an entry with quotations and all would be great! —Caoimhin ceallach (talk) 09:44, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Caoimhin ceallach [Same user as above] I've created it. I've used another attestation that was easier to cite. 92.73.31.113 03:45, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
