Descendants

I wonder how many words for Denmark are not descended from this; I'd have thought the Old English does, hence the Middle English and the Modern English too. Mglovesfun (talk) 11:01, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

The Old English name may be a calque from Old Norse but it's not a borrowing. I don't know how long the Danes were around but the name may go back as far as a late Germanic or Proto-Norse form *Danimarkō, which is consistent with both the Old English and the Old Norse forms. —CodeCat 21:23, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
