Talk:Dämmerung

The ä-spelling is odd. One might start out from the Early Modern German long-vowel variant demerung, which could have become dämerung because the vowel was originally open (cf. spellings like Bär, gähnen etc.). However, while these spellings are attestable, the vowel seems to have been much predominantly short. Otherwise there was an unrelated word dammern, dämmern ("to knock"), from which the ä could have spread, but this isn't really satisfactory either. 2.203.201.113 16:48, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
