Although my edit was reverted, I find it rather doubtful that this word is indeed inherited from Latin. For one, it is too intact and largely unaltered phonetically, except for the basic changes making it "Italianized". Secondly, by the time Italian emerged as its own language in the early second millennium AD, Carthage was barely even a city anymore (and its remnants had been taken over by Muslims centuries before, with the name of the settlement having changed in pronunciation); any knowledge of it among Italians would have been through books and learned people, and likely not a word found in popular or common speech. Therefore, I don't think it passes the test of "inheritance" from Latin; it was clearly a learned borrowing from Classical Latin by scholars who studied the history of Ancient Rome.
