I keep coming across US people saying they interpret CV as meaning aircraft carrier. I think it warrants a mention here. It seems to stand for carrier variant. I'll wait a little while but if nobody objects, I will add it. :) Thecurran 00:41, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

USN aircraft carrier "CV" derives from the initial concept that they would serve the main fleet as a type of cruiser (hence "C") of the aviation type (hence "V"). The type designation "CA" was already used to designate large gun cruisers. Refer to the Washington Naval Treaties and other treaties attempting to limit naval arms races in the 1920s and 1930s. 73.223.84.221 08:04, 29 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
