Possible Etymology?
[edit]The later half of Buncombe is obviously from combe, which is often used in place names such as Ilfracombe or Compton (from cumb + tun, meaning valley-town. [1]). I don't have a source for this, but since the etymology for combe is from Proto-Celtic, I thought the Bun part could be from bonus? It has been used in place names before, such as in Vindobona and Vienna, and often does refer to a settlement. This would mean Buncombe refers to Celtic placename meaning settlement-valley or base-valley, which would be a fairly plausable etymology. 203.111.184.158 15:02, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
