Balatik

[edit]

@Ysrael214 Should the definition "Orion" be in Tagalog? I mean, it seems to be Hiligaynon. Mar vin kaiser (talk) 16:22, 24 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Mar vin kaiser I didn't add the Orion definition, it was @Houflings
I only added the Tres Marias under See also.
But to answer your question, I think so:
1. Balatic is in Vocabulario de la lengua Tagala
(though it's written here that it's specifically the Orion's Belt instead, probaby because the Spanish have their own asterisms according to source at #3)
https://books.google.com.ph/books?redir_esc=y&id=PTIOAAAAIAAJ&q=balatic#v=snippet&q=balatic&f=false
2. Balatik is written at Customs of the Tagalogs by Juan de Plasencia (though written here as Ursa Major)
https://www.gutenberg.org/files/13701/13701-h/13701-h.htm
Just search for "Balatic"
3. At Page 6 of BALATIK: Katutubong Bituin ng mga Pilipino, this text said Plasencia was wrong and N&S corrected the constellation at Vocabulario's 1860 edition. Also stated that Tayabas (in Quezon) also has balatik.

The entry seems to have said it came from Hiligaynon so that's acceptable I think. (which I assume is said at diksyonaryo.ph) And I don't know, I think Balatik refers to Orion (supposedly its star components, not the formation that they make a warrior image) now than just the Orion's belt to simplify things and align with the Greek constellation map
From Facebook but just to show the constellation imagery

@Mar vin kaiser Since we're here, where did you get "Balatik" = Sagittarius? Ysrael214 (talk) 17:40, 24 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Ysrael214: Balatik = Sagittarius is found in Panganiban, but also I think used in Maugnayin? Anyway, thanks for these resources. I'll check all of them and make a comprehensive edit. --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 13:23, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Mar vin kaiser I don't have JVP's dictionary but in Maugnayin, Sagittarius is listed as Mamamanà, and Orion is Oryon, ang Mangangaso Ysrael214 (talk) 13:33, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
