Etymology
[edit]Backfischroman suggests an alternative etymology from English "back", i.e. fish thrown back for being too small. That is nonsense, right? Equinox ◑ 12:27, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
Bilderschmuck der deutschen Sprache (Schrader) 476 - Lol, WP does etymology. The source is from 1912, and in it the author explicitly dismisses this theory (“Das Geschmacklose und Unnatürliche solcher Erklärung liegt wohl auf der Hand”). – Jberkel 08:39, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
- Well the article has much more recent source still carrying "the fish thrown back"-version as well as other explanations. A universally agreed upon origin doesn't seem to exist.--Kmhkmh (talk) 18:52, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
- P.S. also note that the German wikipedia entry on Backfisch (not Backfischroman) discusses the subject in greater detail and is well sourced. In addition to the 2 etymological explanations considered here so far it also offer a few more. --Kmhkmh (talk) 19:07, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
