Rank or Order

[edit]

Rank and order goes primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary, quinary, senary, septenary, octonary, nonary, denary, (12) duodenary, (15) quindenary, (20) vigenary

Should that be a separate entry?

-arily

[edit]

The traditional Received Pronunciation form is now increasingly replaced by ˈerəli, giving a mismatch between adjective and adverb; see (necessarily, primarily, voluntarily) --Backinstadiums (talk) 11:28, 7 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yes, this should probably be mentioned. While the adjective is generally [ˈvɔlənt(ə)ɹi] in England, the adverb is [ˌvɔlənˈtɛ(ː)ɹɪli] alongside [ˈvɔləntɹɪli]. I'm not convinced that this is a "mismatch", however. It's a stress shift. Even in North American English you have [ˈvɑɫənˌtɛɹi] vs. [ˌvɑɫənˈtɛɹəɫi]. English has lots of stress shifts and reduced vowels commonly become full vowels in this process (rélative vs. relátion, éditor vs. editórial). 92.218.236.20 19:23, 13 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
