Indo-Aryan vs. Indo-Iranian

A change was made to refer to Mitanni as an Indo-Aryan language "because the Iranian deity was Atar". However, scholarship thus far has not been able to decide whether the language of the Mitanni represents an Indo-Aryan state or an earlier Indo-Iranian stage of the language. It is true that the deities mentioned in the same document as Agni remained important deities for Indo-Aryan speaking populations. However, some of these deity names can be found as the names of lesser demons in Zoroastrian tradition. The argument goes that, with the major changes that the adoption of Zoroastrianism introduced, we cannot say what role deities like Mithra and Agni would have played in pre-Zoroastrian Iranian tradition. I suggest this part of the etymology be changed from Indo-Aryan back to Indo-Iranian. Kavindad1 (talk) 17:24, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
