ππ° β’ (Ζa) meaning 'how', 'why'
[edit]Gothic uses ππ° β’ (Ζa) to mean 'what':
hwa ist wens?, 'what is hope?'
hwa gatawida Daweid, 'what David did.'
But it also uses hwa to mean 'how' and 'why':
hwa mik haitid frauja, 'Why do you call me Lord?'
hwa faurhteiΓΎ, 'Why are you fearful?'
hwa kannt, guma, ΓΎatei β¦ 'how do you know, O man, whether β¦'
I would suggest that hwa meaning 'what' < PGmc hwat, but β¦
Gothic hwa meaning 'how', 'why' < Pgmc hwΕ, with regular sound change of PGmc -Ε > Gothic -a. David Patrick 50 (talk) 00:34, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
