I'm not sure if you feel completely okay to separate the word like this but to me 기중 + 기 looks and sounds far more natural and it is also how it's prescribed on New-Ace Korean Language Dictionary, where 중기(重機) (junggi) is defined as follows: 1.‘중기관총’의 준말 (short form of heavy machine gun) 2.중공업용 기계 (heavy industry machinery) 3.건설 공사에 쓰이는 일정한 무게 이상의 기계 (machine over a certain weight used in construction work) The last sense may has something to do with a crane but all in all it's a Sino-Korean word; besides, the first part of your scheme namely 기(起) is not a functional prefix in Korean so still maybe better to split the word apart as in a ‘Sino manner’, i.e. like the Chinese entry does (identical to what I initially mentioned).
