"Another common theory is that the name means "south of Yun Range" (云岭之南) However, this has been disproven because the name "Yunling Mountains" first appeared in Tang dynasty (618-907) literature, but the name "Yunnan" first appeared during the Han dynasty (202 BC–220 AD)."
