How exactly is this pronounced? "zas-shee" or "zash-shee"?

It is zash-shee or dzash-shee (zasshí). The hiragana spelling is ざっし, and the middle letter is っ, which is a small symbol (smaller than the regular kana) that indicates that the following consonant is to be doubled ... hence, し (shi) becomes っし (sh-shi). —Stephen 06:02, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks :-) That's what I thought, but the romaji is confusing. The romaji makes it look like "zas-shee"

That’s Hepburn Romanization. Since s-sh is impossible in Japanese, there is no confusion. The only possible sounds with sh are (1) sh and (2) sh-sh. —Stephen 06:15, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
