At first glance, I was in doubt about the existance of this form of the word. Now I think it is OK in certain contexts, but let me try to clarify the grounds of my feeling of wrongness. I gathered some google hit counts of nouns and the derived type3 verbs including 算数 and 算数する:

noun noun count type3 verb count
算数 6,470,000 316
計算 101,000,000 5,470,000
勉強 105,000,000 8,120,000
放浪 7,740,000 203,000
謹慎 8,360,000 15,400

I picked up 放浪 and 謹慎 as their counts are on par with 算数. Please pay attention to the ratio of 算数する to 算数 showing the remarkable rareness of it. (I feel the variant 算数をする is a little more smooth, and it has 882 hits.)

Additionally, my dictionary 大辞林 doesn't indicate 算数 may be used as a type3 verb while all the other listed words do.

IMHO this is a word and you can say "算数する心を育てる" or "先日上場した企業の株価を算数する," but we might have to exclude this entry if we take a conservative posture on it obeying what an authoritative dictionary says, avoiding protologism. At least it needs a usage note to call attention to the rareness. --Tohru 04:51, 15 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think we should keep it, but I agree the usage note is essential. Robert Ullmann 14:11, 15 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
