Formatting for synonyms

[edit]

@Eirikr, Dine2016, Poketalker Hi. For Japanese entries, which of the following is the standard formatting for synonyms?

  1. Use {{ja-r}} under a "Synonyms" header
  2. Use {{ja-l}} and list only its transliteration under a "Synonyms" header
  3. Use {{synonyms}} below the definition and list only its transliteration (no separate header required)

I've been seeing all three options and I wonder which option is preferred and which is not. KevinUp (talk) 09:40, 30 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

@KevinUp: Meh. We don't really have a "standard" per se. I happen to think that the {{synonyms|ja|TERM1|...|TERM2=argle|tr1=blah}} format right under the applicable sense is the cleanest presentation in most cases. In my own editing, the only use I currently have for {{ja-l}} is in any "Alternative forms" section, but even that might be going away with the addition of the alt= parameter in {{ja-kanjitab}}, which strikes me as a better implementation, and more useful to boot (when combined with {{ja-see}}). ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 18:09, 30 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Also, strictly speaking, the terms currently listed as synonyms for 祓串 aren't quite synonyms. For instance, according to the JA WP article at w:ja:大麻 (神道), a 祓串 (haraegushi) is a subset of 大幣 (ōnusa), where the upright portion is made of 白木 (shiraki, I think the article intends the "unvarnished wood" sense; shiraki can also refer to the Neoshirakia japonica species of deciduous trees, but I cannot find specific texts indicating this wood).
I think further research is needed, and then a reworking of the terms now listed as synonyms. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 18:25, 30 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Eirikr: I see. The {{synonyms|ja|TERM1|tr1=...}} format is indeed the cleanest when there are multiple senses, but it tends to clutter up if there are too many synonyms (such as this entry). Another issue I have with with this template is that rōmaji transliteration is not in italics. I suppose I'll have to create a vote based on what I talked about in the Beer Parlour recently.
So {{ja-l}} isn't used that much...Yes, I also think that the alt= parameter in {{ja-kanjitab}} is much better to list down alternative forms compared to the "alternative forms" section.
Anyway, I suppose both #1 and #3 are accepted and it depends on the situation.
As for these "synonyms", many of them appear to be not exact synonyms so I've converted it to the "See also" section for now. KevinUp (talk) 18:46, 30 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
I think User:Wyang/zh-def is the ultimate way to go. --Dine2016 (talk) 08:46, 31 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
