shŭ is "to count" (OC *sroʔ), whence also > "to consider (as significant)", "to blame" (i.e. to single out); shù (OC *sros) is the noun form of shŭ, with the nominalisation suffix -s, thus meaning "number, digit", producing senses incl. "several", "way, method", "fate, destiny", etc.. shuò (OC *sroːg) is mostly in fossilised expressions, meaning "several", from the same root. cù (OC *sʰoːg probably) is unrelated, meaning "dense, thick", thus probably cognate with 促 ("to be close, to become close"), 簇 ("cluster, bunch"). 60.240.101.246 09:33, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
