Can someone expand this? (particularly etymology)

The Kotobank KDJ2 entry says this:

「はばむ（阻）」と同源。のちに「はびこる」と混同され、また、「はば（幅）」を活用させた語という意識も生じた

Translated:

Cognate with habamu (prevent). Later, it was it confused with habikoru 'full', alternatively, it might be a conjugation of haba 'width'.
