[edit]The wording in the etymology box might not be the best. "Very helpful." is a less objective statement than what is generally acceptable in Wikipedia writing etiquette. Might have to consider changing that.
As for the etymology, most dictionaries suggest it is just a way to alter the rhythmic pattern or the "meter" of the word[1][2] so that it is easier to say or sounds more comfortable.[3]
I suspect this has already been addressed in the Etymology scriptorium. If that is the case, the etymology should be updated as soon as possible.

- @KisaragiAyami, I think you're correct, the た here is almost certainly the ancient combining form of 手. I'll see if I can find any sources that go beyond just vaguely saying 「音調を整える接頭辞」. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 00:28, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
