About how “carnival” entered Chinese
[edit]I wonder if there is any proof indicating that this word is borrowed into Chinese via Cantonese? My question comes from the fact that the original word doesn't have an "-n" after "carni-", while the Cantonese pronunciation is /ka nin wa/, with an /n/. By contrast, the Wu pronunciation doesn't have a -n ending in 年, and the vowel of 华(/o/) seems to be more similar to the original /əɫ/ than the Cantonese /a/ is. 辛时雨 (talk) 03:28, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
