Tone of 占

@Dokurrat, 沈澄心, TongcyDai, Maraschino Cherry Hi, is 占 read zhān or zhàn in 占城 and 占婆? Hanyu Da Cidian indicates that 占 in 占城 should be read in tone 1, but right now the entry has tone 4. RcAlex36 (talk) 02:18, 1 March 2025 (UTC)

I believe you're correct - the standard pronunciation should be zhān. However, the Revised Mandarin Chinese Dictionary (重編國語辭典修訂本) from Taiwan doesn't specifically mention which pronunciation should be used for this place name. Additionally, the Hakka, Eastern Min, and Southern Min Wikipedia versions of "占婆" all suggest that the first character is read with 陰平. That said, the 去聲 pronunciation zhàn is also quite common in usage, as can be heard in this video (0:00) and more. TongcyDai (talk) 02:32, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
