[edit]@Cnilep, Vorziblix, Fish bowl, any chance that this is derived not as wasei eigo, but instead as a clipping of アイ・キャッチャー (ai kyatchā, “eye-catcher”)? This longer term appears in various online references, such as here at Kotobank or here at Weblio. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 00:10, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
- It sounds plausible, but I don't know the actual history. My first thought was that it may be related to or influenced by eye-catching. (FWIW, the OED dates eye-catching to 1770 and eye-catcher to 1787.) In any case, there is probably some link to eye and forms of catch, but I don't know what the precise nature of that link is.
