@Eirikr, Poketalker, Dine2016: You all seem to be better at literary words than I am; could someone help expand the entry? —suzukaze (tc) 02:33, 4 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

@suzukaze -- oofda, this is a biggie. This verb has tons of usage in older Japanese, the bulk of which would probably qualify as classical, which ties into the complicated issues under discussion at Wiktionary:Beer_parlour/2018/February#Middle_Japanese. DJR shows most content with classical yodan and shimo nidan conjugations, and DJS shows some as godan and also as shimo nidan. I certainly haven't encountered this term in modern contexts, and in media, pretty much only as the polite imperative -tamae which has lexically developed into basically a verb suffix.
The historical development is quite interesting, but complex, and tamau appears to be ultimately cognate with everyday verb 食べる (taberu, to eat).
I've got an edit window open, but it's going to take me a while to figure out how to reconcile different sources and format it all sensibly. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 18:01, 6 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
