Seems to be originally coming from this story from Zhanguoce, Yance. 燕人立太子平為君。是為昭王。弔死問生、卑辞厚幣、以招賢者。問郭隗曰、「斉因孤之国乱、而襲破燕。孤極知燕小不足以報。誠得賢士与共国以雪先王之恥、孤之願也。先生視可者。得身事之。」 隗曰、「古之君有以千金使涓人求千里馬者。買死馬骨五百金而返。君怒。涓人曰、『死馬且買之。況生者乎馬今至矣。』不期年、千里馬至者三。今王必欲致士、先従隗始。況賢於隗者、豈遠千里哉。」 於是昭王為隗改築宮、師事之。於是士争趨燕。
