I don't think Bernal is a valid reference since it has been rejected by all linguists as fringe theories (8mike (talk) 12:37, 24 August 2015 (UTC))Reply

Etymology: Why not from λαμπάς

[edit]

Why not from λαμπάς?

Highly unlikely. In Ancient Greek, "υ" and "α" come from quite different sources and don't just switch back and forth from one to the other, so there's nothing to explain the second syllable. The difference between a third-declension "δ" stem with accent on the last syllable and a second-declension thematic stem with accent on the first syllable doesn't help, either, though that could be secondary.
The whole thing about οὐρανός (ouranós) doesn't seem all that plausible, and there are enough oddities about the basic shape of the word to cast doubt on it being an inherited Greek word. Place names are precisely where Pre-Greek substratum words would be most likely, so that would be my guess. Chuck Entz (talk) 03:30, 20 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
