Gimirri is accurately transcribed as გიმირრი, however, contemporary Georgian very rarely displays repeated letters - it is almost always spelled as it sounds - hence the contracted გმირი. "Gimirri" was a loan-word that antedates even the Georgian monumental script Mrgvlovani. It is a change similar to the transformation of the Hokkien word "seng-lí" into the Tagalog "sangley": "trader" becomes "Chinese"; "Cimmerian" becomes "hero".
