I think the first syllable may be the remnant of some prefix, perhaps from some other language. I'm not sure though. It could well be (what's called in Sino-Tibetan linguistics) a prefix run from the other zodiac signs. Wyang (talk) 08:19, 15 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

It's true that the word is originated as "โรง". But when it comes with มะเส็ง มะเมีย มะแม, "โรง" then becomes "มะโรง" to rhyme with those words. Nothing special with this "มะ". --Octahedron80 (talk) 09:02, 15 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
