Old Telugu

[edit]

@Pulimaiyi The only headword in {{R:dra-ote:Radhakrishna}} is గొఱియ and the two headwords in Inscriptional Glossary of Andhra Pradesh are గొఱ్య & గొఱియ. In the entry for గొఱియ in {{R:dra-ote:Radhakrishna}} it says

A var[iant] of goṟe, goṟṟe and goṟya

Since గొఱ్ఱె is not a headword in either reference, could it instead be an archaic spelling rather than representative of Old Telugu? And would the -(ఇ)య forms be a separate formation on the Proto-Dravidian entry? Kutchkutch (talk) 04:59, 11 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Kutchkutch: I cannot access {{R:dra-ote:Radhakrishna}} but if this term is listed as a variant of a term that is known to be Old Telugu, shouldn't it be treated as Old Telugu too? And of course, entries can be created for the headword forms upon which this lemma can be given as an altform. And I have not seen any evidence that suggests these formations were innovated at the Proto-Dravidian stage rather at the Old Telugu stage itself. -- 𝘗𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘺𝘪(𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬) 08:09, 11 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Pulimaiyi: Yes, గొఱ్ఱె could be inferred to be Old Telugu
with the reasoning that గొఱియ & గొఱ్య are known to be Old Telugu, and గొఱియ is a variant of గొఱె, గొఱ్ఱె and గొఱ్య.
However, since this form is only mentioned and not shown as directly attested in the references used, when the entries are created for the attested forms, it might be better to have గొఱ్ఱె as an alternative form. Both {{R:dra-ote:Radhakrishna}} and Inscriptional Glossary of Andhra Pradesh are both available on archive.org, so the reference templates could include the corresponding links to archive.org. @Kutchkutch: Okay, I see your point. In that case, I am fine with one or both of the other forms being created and the main lemma status being granted to it; this can be shown as an altform. The modern Telugu descendant can be shows either at the main lemma or here as I have no preference for one over the other. -- 𝘗𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘺𝘪(𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬) 04:01, 12 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
