@Felix.gif where is the attestation for this spelling? i have only ever seen டாணா and this spelling breaks multiple rules of tamil phonology/orthography - and there is never a double meyezhettu and the start of a word Cyrohdn3 (talk) 19:53, 3 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Cyrohdn3 I also made a post about this being odd in the Tearoom, but I'll reply here. I came across it in A Companion Reader to Arden's Progressive Tamil Grammar on page 3, but it also comes up here: ஆனந்தரங்கப் பிள்ளை நாட்குறிப்பு : தொகுதி ஒன்பது on page 23.

ட்டாணா comes up as a lemma in Fabricius' (p. 470) and Winslow's (p. 535) dictionaries. Fabricius also includes டாணா as a lemma and both dictionaries reference தாணா as synonym. The etymology is given as Hindi/Hindustani, which works with थाना (although not a retroflex t).
There are also few other entries under ட்ட although both dictionaries mention that it is only used for foreign words (and Winslow specifically mentions Telugu ఠ ṭha)1.
Also, doing a prefix search for ட்ட on DDSA through all the Tamil dictionaries gives a bunch of results from the Tamil Moli Akarathi, but I haven't yet looked through any of that.

I've removed the template-generated IPA transcription for now, because the odd/archaic orthography of this word doesn't seem to be handled properly by the template.
The Hindi word has an aspirated unvoiced dental (/t̪ʰ/) initially, and the ட்ட spelling gets transcribed as a /ʈːʈɐ/ which seems incorrect. I'm also not entirely sure how that sound should change when loaned in to Tamil. Felix.gif (talk) 13:52, 9 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
