@AryamanA, माधवपंडित Gujaratilexicon suggests a root झृ, which I can't find in any of the Sanskrit dictionaries, but would make sense etymologically. What do you guys think? DerekWinters (talk) 01:56, 14 February 2018 (UTC)
- @DerekWinters: Yep, it would be *झर् (jhar), a variant of क्षर् (kṣar). See Proto-Indo-Aryan *gẓʰar-, this is an example of Prakrit retaining Proto-Indo-Aryan thorn clusters that Sanskrit simplified to क्ष. —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करें • योगदान) 02:00, 14 February 2018 (UTC)
- @DerekWinters: Sanskrit has झर (jhara, “flowing, melting”) but that obviously is a Prakrit loanword. As Aryaman said, the Sanskrit root is क्षर् (kṣar). This one's from MIA *jʰarati. -- माधवपंडित (talk) 07:59, 14 February 2018 (UTC)
