Classical Sanskrit

[edit]

@Bhagadatta, is {{R:DCS}} a reliable resource to know if a Sanskrit word was or was not attested in the Vedic chronolect of the language? It otherwise appears to be good resource. ·~ dictátor·mundꟾ 16:23, 13 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

dcs misses a lot of terms, tbh. monier-williams is the best. and beside himālaya, he gives Bhag. = Bhagavadgītā = Classical Sanskrit. if you have doubts search in sanskrit wikisource's vedic literature. — Svārtava16:48, 13 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Inqilābī: DCS does miss a lot of terms, even those attested in the Rig Veda. More importantly, "Vedic" does not refer to only the language of the Rig Veda; it's also the language used in the Taittiriya & Vajasenayi Samhitas and their respective Brahmanas (commentaries). But DCS's coverage of these texts is very poor. -- 𝓑𝓱𝓪𝓰𝓪𝓭𝓪𝓽𝓽𝓪(𝓽𝓪𝓵𝓴) 02:12, 14 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Bhagadatta: So I guess one needs to check other resources as well— I think Turner & Monier-Williams also have this information (by mentioning the literary works). On a different note, do you think it’s necessary to write sa-cls as etymons, especially for learned borrowings? ·~ dictátor·mundꟾ 21:08, 14 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Inqilābī: Well, not strictly necessary as such; what I sometimes do is use sa-cls (and sa-ved) for terms exclusive to those chronolects. But I think sa-cls should never be used with {{inh}}; (e.g.diff). -- 𝓑𝓱𝓪𝓰𝓪𝓭𝓪𝓽𝓽𝓪(𝓽𝓪𝓵𝓴) 02:15, 15 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
