Etymology of Assamese শালিকা (xalika)

[edit]

@Msasag, should its Sanskrit etymon not be सारिका (sārikā), शारिका (śārikā)? -- dictātor·mundī 15:17, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Inqilābī Unsure. Msasag (talk) 15:57, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Msasag: Where did you get the etymon as शलाका (śalākā)? See here, though it’s just a lexicographic rather than linguistic work; but see this entry for other Magadhan cognates. Do you not think শালিকা is closer to सारिका? (But then *শালিক would have been expected, perhaps…) -- dictātor·mundī 16:46, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Inqilābī शलाका is present in spoken sanskrit dictionary. I added the etymology in 2017 when I didn't have much knowledge on etymology. Msasag (talk) 16:55, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Msasag: शलाका is indeed a Sanskrit word, but my question was: did you find it from a source that says the Assamese word is descended from it? If not, then would you mind if I change the etymon to सारिका, शारिका? @Inqilābī I don't think I found it in such source. And śārikā seems to be a better source. You can edit it. Msasag (talk) 07:41, 27 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Msasag, is শালিকী an alternative form of শালিকা as shown here, or is it from a different source (or perhaps representing a suffixed form of the original word)? -- dictātor·mundī 16:54, 27 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Inqilābī শালিকী is a feminine form. Msasag (talk) 17:08, 27 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
