@Gfarnab Platts is notoriously bad at Hindi etymologies, it's way way outdated. A good free online source for Hindi etymology is Dasa's Hindi-Hindi dictionary, which, as you can see, says मियाँ संज्ञा पुं० [फ़ा०]. The Oxford Hindi-English dictionary agrees with Persian "miyân" too. Thanks for the help with Arabic/Persian borrowings! —Aryaman ^{(मुझसे बात करो)} 01:54, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
