How many species might this term apply to?

[edit]
User:DCDuring Do you know if this term is synonymous with Rubia cordifolia? I am wondering about tge taxonomic specificity of this term because of a definition in the Tamil Lexicon listing Indian madder as referring to this species, not Rubia manjit. Other Tamil works such as Winslow's comprehensive Tamil and English dictionary and Fabricius's Tamil and English dictionary list the same term as Benghal madder or Rubia manjit/mangit. I am in the process of making a page for the Tamil term. Do you think that one or both entries should mention Rubia cordifolia? Am I correct in assuming that "this term" refers to the Sanskrit word? The only source I have for translations of taxonomic plant names has the following: Rubia cordifolia at Germplasm Resources Information Network (Click on common names tab.). From that I infer that some view the Sanskrit word as covering Rubia cordifolia. Species-level coverage of vernacular names is hard to research because most usage of vernacular names is imprecise. It would be nice if you knew all the species of Rubia that grew where Sanskrit was spoken. DCDuring (talk) 22:45, 3 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
