@AryamanA: The Gujaratilexicon/Oxford dictionary says the word is originally from Marathi. But the Marathi entry (ढोकळा (ḍhokḷā)) created by @Kutchkutch says the word is from Gujarati. So what's the original source? Gotitbro (talk) 06:49, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

@Gotitbro: 'સર૰ म. ढोकळा' in the Gujaratilexicon/Oxford dictionary is probably equivalent to 'Compare ढोकळा (ḍhokḷā)' on Wiktionary, and does not suggest that Gujarati ઢોકળું (ḍhokaḷũ) is from Marathi ढोकळा (ḍhokḷā). @DerekWinters According to pages 134-135 in Indian Food: A Historical Companion by K. T. Achaya, 'dhokla' was first mentioned as 'dukkia' in a Jain manuscript from 1066, and 'dhokla' in its present form first appears in the text Varanaka-Samuchaya from 1520. So it appears that this was originally a Gujarati word that other languages borrowed at some point after c. 1500. Kutchkutch (talk) 17:28, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
