Etymology

[edit]

@AryamanA I have a doubt on this etymology, that the Bengali word gamcha came from Sanskrit अङ्गोञ्छ (aṅgoñcha). I'd expect its inherited cognate to be *আংছা (*aṅcha) in Bengali and *আঙোছা (*aṅüsa) or *অঙছা (*oṅosa) in Assamese. And this word does exist in Kamta as আংছা (aṅsa). @Msasag: It certainly seems to be very different from all the other inherited forms in various languages. Turner lists gamchā under Bihari as a descendant of the Sanskrit. I guess the only way this could work is if the initial a- is dropped (which isn't that strange) but then why would the nasal be detached?
Not sure of any other possible source for it though.
BTW, I'm attending a Sylheti class that SOAS is offering free online starting tomorrow. I added high tone support for Module:syl-translit but it seems to also need schwa deletion. Let me know what else can be done for Sylheti. —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करेंयोगदान) 17:16, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@AryamanA Great! For now, I noticed that the anuswara transliterates as "ng", I think that should be changed to "ṅ". I'll tell you if anything else should be done for it. I think Bodo, Rabha and Deori transliterations should be added. Msasag (talk) 17:26, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Msasag: Started Bodo, feel free to add to Module:brx-translit/testcases. Also started MOD:Rohg-translit for Rohingya. Will get to Rabha and Deori soon. —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करेंयोगदान) 02:44, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@AryamanA Should we follow IAST-based or normally used Roman Bodo? In Roman Bodo, अ o, आ a, इ i, उ u, ए e, ऐ wi, ओ w, औ wu, ख k, ग g, ङ ng, ज j, थ t, द d, न n, फ f, ब b, म m, य y, र r, ल l, व w, स s, ह h. The voiceless stops (k, t, p/f) are aspirated. Some people add the "h" and others don't. Msasag (talk) 05:34, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
I've edited it. Msasag (talk) 06:13, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@AryamanA There should also be MOD:Cakm-translit for Chakma; or would you rather suffer or even die from anything, than have anything to do with me no matter what I say or do here? --Apisite (talk) 06:50, 30 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Apisite: I'll add it. I merely have no interest in my real name being associated with what comes off as antisemitism, and I don't have any obligation to deal with political views that cross a line for me. —AryamanA (मुझसे बात करेंयोगदान) 16:11, 30 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@AryamanA Can you make a separate transliteration module for Kamta (rkt)? It currently uses Assamese one but there are phonological differences. Also add schwa deletion. I made Wiktionary:Rabha transliteration. Will make for Deori soon. Msasag (talk) 16:36, 1 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
