New page needed for अचार

[edit]

In Hindi, the word for pickles is अचार not आचार. The information about pickles needs to be moved to a separate page with the correct spelling of अचार.

Actually, it's an older form that is directly borrowed from Persian. It is not as common as अचार (which according to Platts' dictionary, is the common or vulgar form of आचार). --Dijan (talk) 04:20, 12 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
अचार may be the vulgar form in Urdu, but it is the standard form in Hindi. I don't think the spelling आचार was ever used for pickles in Hindi. Remember, Platts is mainly an Urdu dictionary. I noticed you modified the article, so it's okay. --Foreverknowledge (talk) 22:48, 12 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Well, "आचार" is also used in Haridev Bahri's Hindi dictionary in an example ("आचार का मर्तबान"), on page 497, under the entry "मर्तबान", to mean "pickle jar". So, apparently it is used in Hindi, which is why I marked it as rare. --Dijan (talk) 21:31, 14 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
It's not really important either way, but just for the sake of completion, I will add that it is possible आचार is in rare use as you state. However, it is also possible that आचार "pickle" was simply a typo in Bahri's dictionary considering it was not in the main entry and there is only one occurrence of it. In fact, there are several typos in that dictionary. --Foreverknowledge (talk) 08:17, 16 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
There are many "typos" in all Hindi dictionaries I've seen and used. That doesn't mean that a spelling isn't used. --Dijan (talk) 19:30, 16 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
