"Kizil" قىزىل meaning "red" is usually transliterated into Chinese characters as "克孜勒" (Kezile), as in 克孜勒蘇／克孜勒苏 (Kèzīlèsū) (Kizilsu) and 克孜勒陶 (Kizilto). So how did they choose the 黑 in 黑孜葦／黑孜苇 (Hēizīwěi) (Kiziloy)? Is a Kyrgyz dialect thing? Historical reasons? The 葦 is matching the sound of 'oy'/'oi' meaning 'depression' or 'basin'. You can even see the 孜 character (zi) like we see in 克孜勒. But I don't see 黑 (hei) anywhere in "Kizil". Also, it is unusual to use a character that means "black" used to represent part of a word that means “red”, so that's why I'm thinking there may be some twisted kind of semantic connection- is 'kizil' a dark red? --Geographyinitiative (talk) 14:17, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
