I think it doesn't (normally). Poets like to pronounce поэт with /o/.

Poets usually refer поэт to women as well (if the gender is known or when talking about a specific poetess), rather than using поэтесса. It remains a grammatical masculine though. It's not very unusual, the same happens with учитель. --Anatoli T. ^{(обсудить}/^вклад) 07:49, 14 December 2015 (UTC)
