Russian proper nouns in lower case?

[edit]

@Wikitiki89 Could you link me to countless discussions saying that Russian proper nouns can be written in lower case? I oppose such a change. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 23:34, 28 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

I don't think the discussions have ever specifically been about Russian, but basically we have a definition of "proper noun" that is based on how the word is used, and not based on how it is spelled. While it is true that most languages have some sort of association between proper nouns and capitalization, there is no language whose capitalization rules match up perfectly with our (i.e. Wiktionary's) definition of "proper noun". In other words, Russian has a set of rules about which nouns should be capitalized, but the correspondence between the nouns that are capitalized in Russian and the nouns that we at Wiktionary call "proper" is not completely perfect. At the moment, not all of our entries are consistent about the distinction between common and proper nouns, but we should still work toward making them so. --WikiTiki89 02:45, 29 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
I am going to restore it for now. When you get some support for having Russian proper nouns in lower case, we can revisit. This was unilateral. We have neither rules or conventions for that. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 12:22, 29 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
