Possibly rare or archaic usage?

Talking with a Ukrainian friend, she had never heard the definition, "swindler" for this word. Instead, she insisted that it was only a singular for "деруни", a Ukrainian potato patty discussed in this article: https://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%94%D0%B5%D1%80%D1%83%D0%BD%D0%B8. I confirmed this with another Ukrainian friend, who knew it only as the potato patty. Both of them are under 30, so perhaps the other definition is losing favor to the food?
