Talk:вараны
@Wikitiki89, Atitarev: The stress pretty clearly falls on the first syllable on the audio file, but “вараны” in Belarusian–Russian dictionaries and Belarusian dictionaries at slounik.org says it's вараны́, which would agree with the Russian word. Should we add it? --Per utramque cavernam (talk) 21:06, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
- I can't listen right now but if it falls on the first syllable, then it's wrong. The stress in the entry is correct. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 21:31, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
- There are a lot of non-phonemic and non-lexical factors that go into where the phonetic stress actually appears, such as intonation and breathing, so I really can't tell if this audio file is a mistake or if it just came out that way because of such factors (it would be easier to tell if it were in context within a conversation). Either way, the phonemic lexical stress in this word is certainly on the ы, and if it had been on the first syllable, the vowel would have been an о. --WikiTiki89 21:51, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks to you both. Perhaps we should ask for the deletion of that audio file over at commons... --Per utramque cavernam (talk) 22:04, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
Meaning
[edit]Isn’t it almost always used for horses, just like in Russian? Google gives no results for "вараны колер". And because it is restricted for horses, it is barely used at all; most results in Google for вараны are for Varanidae (Russian вара́ны (varány)) or for ва́раны ‘boiled’, the past participle of варыць (varycʹ, “to boil”) (Russian ва́ренный (várennyj); this is probably what the speaker says in the recording).
