This looks like an instance of Grassman's law applied on Proto-Indo-European *bʰembʰ- (“to pump, to swell”), cognate with Proto-Slavic *bǫba (“larva”). Given that there are two other similar roots with related meaning, namely Ancient Greek βόμβος (bómbos, “boom”) and Ancient Greek πομπή (pompḗ, “pomp”) (phonetically similar to Proto-Slavic *pǫpъ (“navel, belly button”), English pimple), it's likely that all of them were onomatopoeic in origin and only later became grammaticized.
