Relation to Sanskrit प्रमन्थ?
[edit]Paul Carus (1974) proposes that Προμηθεύς's gloss as "forethinker" arose from "ingenious afterthought" (i.e. folk etymology) & instead links Ancient Greek Προμηθεύς (Promētheús) to Sanskrit प्रमन्थ (pramantha, “the rod of hard wood which produced fire by rapid rotation in a piece of soft wood”) (Carus's gloss), the latter component of which, Sanskrit मथ् (math) (glossed here), is possibly from Proto-Indo-European *men- (“to stand out, to tower”) > "stick"? I'm not incredibly well-versed in IE sound laws so can anybody else judge how sound Carus's proposal is? 15:00, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
