re:the pronunciation what dialect pronounces this /ğ/ as [ɣ]? Or do they all? I would have thought it would be [œ:ɾendʒi]… Colin
- The pronounciation was added by Sinek, who is from Lozengrad/Saranta Ekklesies, which is in the part of Turkey situated on the Balkan pæninsula. Do you expect north-western dialects to differ from the mainstream ones? The uſer hight Bogorm converſation 16:00, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, actually I've heard the Balkan dialects differ fairly significantly from Standard. Victor Friedman counts Balkan Turkish (WRT) as part of the Balkan sprachbund with non-Standard phonological and morphological features owing to areal influence from non-Turkic languages. - Not to say that the [ɣ] comes from IE influence, but I was under the impression that it has fallen out of use in Standard Turkish with the sole reflex of lengthening the preceding vowel (as in [œ:]).CMEHalverson 23:27, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
